The big trend seems to be turning movies into Broadway shows. I think Disney (Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, etc.) has done this the most, but there are so many other films that have been brought to the stage. I heard that School of Rock was one of them, and I was kind of confused.
See, School of Rock is one of my favorite movies. But the thing about it is, one of the reasons that it's so good is because of the music that is in it. The soundtrack features songs from Led Zeppelin, Stevie Nicks, and The Who. For me, a girl raised to love classic rock, this is a perfect movie and perfect soundtrack. I didn't think Andrew Lloyd Webber was going to get the rights to all of the songs featured in the movie, so what was the point? Still, I was intrigued, so it got added to my list of lottery entries.
One credit card charge later, and I was on my way! School of Rock is over at the Winter Garden, the former home of Cats. The outside of the theatre is decorated with a bunch of school designs, and the walls look like chalkboards, complete with a full write out of "the history of rock." It's a very kid-friendly show, and you can even take pictures in front of a locker.
I know I was a little weary, but this show was awesome! Like in the movie, the cast is mostly made up of kids, who are all way more talented than I will ever be. The songs were great, the jokes were super funny (tons of music references for my fellow rock fans!), and the cast was amazing. The only issue was that I left really wanting to watch the movie...which I don't own. Still, the soundtrack is a nice substitution. If you're looking for a kid-friendly show, I highly recommend checking out School of Rock!
