The Macy’s Flower Show, one of the top spring events in New York City, is back for its 66th annual showcase at the department store’s flagship Herald Square location. If you’ve been following my bucket list journey, the Macy’s Flower Show should sound familiar to you by now. This is the third year I’ve braved the crowds and resisted the urge to shop in order to check it out. For the 2019 Macy’s Flower Show, guests are treated to “Journey to Paradisios: Operation Inspiration.” Featuring an eclectic outer space theme, the annual flower showcase takes you on a trip outside of our galaxy. A variety of flowers, many of which are grown here in New York State, are on display for nature lovers, curious parties, and everyone in between to enjoy. The Macy’s Flower Show was first launched in the chain’s San Francisco store back in 1946, with a small setup of potted plants and orchids on display. Over the years, the show has grown to become one of the premier springtime events in the New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Minneapolis, and Chicago stores. In fact more than one MILLION flowers are featured in the show. Take a step into Macy’s, and you’ll instantly be taken to a whole new world. In keeping with this year’s theme, Macy’s has several staff members dressed as astronauts to give tours and list some details of the show. This is a nice extra touch that lets you really get into the show, versus just walking through a department store looking at some flowers while you shop for purses and cologne. Also included in the 2019 Macy’s Flower Show is a unique partnership with the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) here in the city. Scattered throughout the flowers are different “fashion pods,” each with a custom outfit designed by an FIT student. The dress designs borrow from the looks, shapes, and textures of different flowers, bugs, and other parts of nature. To me, this was a great touch for the show. Macy’s is, after all, a department store, and I loved having these Lady Gaga-esque outfits on display to tie the theme together. The Macy’s Flower Show is one of the more popular spring events here in New York City. If you want to enjoy some beautiful flowers, but you don’t feel like waiting for the cold weather to disappear, I definitely recommend adding it to your New York bucket list!
